Fall’s Best-Kept Travel Secrets

Fewer crowds, better tables, golden views. See why October is quietly the best month of the year.

In partnership with

From September to December, my calendar is packed with events, symposiums, fam trips, openings, and fairs.

The travel industry runs at full speed, and for good reason: fall is the most practical season to travel.

It’s when I recommend my already savvy clients take their trips.

The tables are easier to book.

The air is softer.

The crowds that flooded Amalfi in July have gone home, leaving its cliffs to the few who linger.

In Napa, the vineyards aren’t just vines, they’re alive with harvest, spilling barrels of promise into the air.

And in Kyoto, the maples begin to glow, painting temples in red and gold as if the season itself were showing off.

Fall isn’t a consolation prize for missing summer.

It’s when the world finally exhales, and the savvy traveler slips in.

Why Fall Beats Summer for Luxury Travel

Fall isn’t one story, it’s many.

Each city tells it differently; some with crisp air and golden light, others with slower rhythms and tables suddenly free for the asking. This is the season when destinations reveal sides they keep hidden in summer.

In Prague, the tourists chasing “Instagram sunsets” have vanished, and what’s left is a city that belongs to candlelight and cold evenings. Charles Bridge at dusk feels like it’s yours alone, a privilege you’ll never find in July, no matter how early you wake up.

In Rio de Janeiro, the beaches don’t stop buzzing, but they breathe differently in September. You’re not elbowing through New Year’s crowds; you’re watching the same Copacabana sunsets with space to stretch, a caipirinha in hand, and the samba beat at your pace, not the city’s.

And Asheville, North Carolina? In summer it’s hikers and road-trippers. In fall, it turns decadent. The Blue Ridge Mountains catch fire with color, the vineyards open their cellars, and harvest festivals blur into brewery hops. It’s small-town America, but dialed up with the kind of taste only the season can deliver.

That’s just three.

Mandarin Oriental NYC Unveils Refreshed Speakeasy “The Bar”

On September 18, Mandarin Oriental, New York will reopen The Bar, its newly revamped 45-seat speakeasy formerly known as The Office. Once a space reserved for private bookings, it’s now opening to hotel guests and locals seeking a more sensory, story-driven experience. Its new Silk Road theme blends global artistry and flavors, signature cocktails represent cities like Beijing, Bangkok, and Istanbul, served in ritualized style. The dim lighting, deep leather seating, and curated artifacts create an atmosphere of craftsmanship. LTA

When your cocktail tells a story (instead of just doing its job), you know you’re in the hands of someone who cares about the atmosphere as much as the drink.

A Private Riad Oasis Inside Nobu Marrakech

Set just minutes from the maddening souks and square of Marrakech, the Nobu Riad is a buy-out-only private haven nested within the Nobu Hotel complex. Once a nobleman’s home, the restored property blends borrowed Japanese minimalism with Moroccan geometry: courtyards scented with jasmine, rooftop pools shaded by palms, and richly tiled rooms lit by lanterns. You get total seclusion, 24/7 staff, private hammam options, all while being a stone’s throw from the city’s heartbeat. CNTRAVELER

Sometimes the best way to experience Marrakech isn’t with a guidebook; it’s by shutting the front gate and forgetting how far-flung the hustle is.
